Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Background:

In the realm of the 2001 agreement between Rio de Janeiro City Hall - PCRJ and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme – UN-Habitat, a continuous cooperation is developed in the area of sustainable urban development between the two institutions. Urban mobility is one of the main pillars for achieving a better urban future and the role of the local government is critical to translate global agendas such as the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda into public policies.

Given the importance of data to catalyze the sustainability of urban mobility, the Coordination of Transport Network Management (Coordenadoria de Gest?o da Rede de Transportes), under the Technical Coordination of Planning (Coordenadoria Técnica de Planejamento) of the Municipal Secretariat of Transport of Rio de Janeiro City Hall (Secretaria Municipal de Transportes do Município do Rio de Janeiro - SMTR) is expanding its emphasis on the registry of geographical data related to transport in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. In order to support this effort, an Urban Mobility intern is needed.

The UN-Habitat Urban Mobility internship is for 6 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of UN?-Habitat Brazil Office and working in close collaboration with the team of the Coordination of Transport Network Management, from Rio de Janeiro City Hall, the intern will:

- Provide support for the teams of the Coordination of Transport Network Management of Rio de Janeiro and UN-Habitat..

- He/she will assist the team in mapping, registering and studying the network of public transportation of passengers operating in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. This encompasses the bus systems (municipal and intermunicipal), the complementary transportation (municipal and intermunicipal), the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, train system and other regulated transportation mode of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro..

- Map itineraries, register geographical information, register operational information and other types of information related to public transportation in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Mostly, the work will be develop ed in the office; field inspections and external surveys are occasional.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Preferred Areas of Studies:

Geography, Civil Engineering and Architecture. Have knowledge of geographic information softwares (e.g. ArcGIS)

Applicants are expected to have an interest for the area of urban mobility and transportation, especially for public transportation of passengers

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written Portuguese is required. Knowledge of English and Spanish is desirable.
