Org. Setting and Reporting

The mission of the United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS) is to help Secretariat entities, including peace operations, departments and offices, succeed by providing rapid, effective, efficient and responsible support services.

As the main operational arm of DOS, the Division for Special Activities (DSA) provides direct services, manages relationships with non-Secretariat support partners, and coordinates cross-cutting support solutions delivered by DOS, particularly in special situations such as support for start-up, surge, or closure of operational entities (including field missions) and emergencies.

The Front Office of DSA helps coordinate all of DSA's activities and supports priority projects as needed. Our work covers strategy, analytics as well as communication and coordination.

The internship in DOS/DSA is for a period of two to six months. The internship is UNPAID and can be performed on a full-time or part-time basis as agreed with the manager.

Our interns work up to five days per week, with supervision and support of a staff member.

Responsibilities

Our interns work as members of our team in the Front Office of DSA, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in DOS, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. We offer internship opportunities in two areas:

AREA 1: STRATEGIC SUPPORT

- Support strategic analysis to improve operational support provision across the UN Secretariat

- Support strategic peacekeeping reviews, including through analytics

- Support mission support planning activities

- Support priority projects such as specific innovation or improvement initiatives

- Support activities related to operational partnerships

This track resembles consulting-like work, and draws on conceptualization, PowerPoint and project management skills.

AREA 2: ANALYTICS

- Help analyse resource and cost drivers in missions

- Support strategic peacekeeping reviews through analytics

- Support the teams in preparing data, data models, and surveys

- Develop dashboards and visualizations for senior managers, and provide user support

- Support data mining, optimization, metrics development, and predictive analytics

This track focuses on working with data and data models, as well as data visualization.

AREA 1 : STRATEGIC SUPPORT

- Knowledge in strategy development and management

- Knowledge of project management techniques and approaches

- Knowledge of key business tools (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint)

- Familiarity in with consulting-like projects

AREA 2: ANALYTICS

- Knowledge in analytics, information management, visualization, and performance optimization

- Knowledge of data management techniques, quantitative analysis and methods

- Knowledge of key business tools (e.g. Excel, PowerPivot, PowerPoint)

- Knowledge of analytics tools (e.g. Microsoft SQL, PowerBI, SAP Business Objects, Tableau, Qlik)

- Knowledge in data visualization or survey design

Education

We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. Typically, our interns are pursuing studies in the following areas:

AREA 1: STRATEGIC AND PROJECT SUPPORT

We seek candidates with relevant coursework in Business Administration, Management, Strategy Development, Project Management, Operations Research, or Public Administration.

AREA 2: ANALYTICS AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE

We seek candidates with relevant coursework in Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Visualization or Analytics

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme the following conditions must be met:

-Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher);

b. be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor's level or equivalent);

c. have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

-Be computer literate in standard software applications;

-Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

-Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

It can be an advantage if you have interests, skills and knowledge in the areas stated under the competency "Professionalism".

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

We recruit interns throughout the year for assignments of at least 3 months. In your cover note, please indicate when you would like to start your internship. Please note that start and end dates are flexible:

- Fall (September to December)

- Winter/Spring (January to April)

- Summer (May to August)
